Years in Camp (camper and staff member): 9 years as a camper, 6 years as a staff member
Favorite Food: Cheese (Or a Nutella Crepe or Sushi)
Favorite Camp tradition: The food fight on the last day of camp!
Favorite Quote: Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened! As cheesy as that sounds someone says it to me at the end of every summer and that is the only way I get through 9 months of no camp!
What you look forward to every year at camp: The people!
Favorite Camp Memory: The first year I won the spirit stick as a counselor! It meant something to win it being a counselor instead of a camper and when I was rushed by 200 campers I just started to cry!
What FBS Means to Hayley: I simply cannot imagine my childhood, let alone my life without the presence of Fitness by the Sea. When I think back upon my childhood, I think back to all my cherished memories created on the shores of FBS. Considering, I grew up at FBS starting at the age of 5, the community behind FBS has not only become my friends and role models, but they more so have become my family. FBS was my go to place when I needed comfort, consoling, advice and to simply allow myself to be a child. FBS has a magical spirit to it where whenever I was not at camp, I longed to be at camp with the people I loved. Now, considering I am lucky and privileged enough to still be so connected to the FBS family and be a counselor myself — my goal is to give back to children what other prior FBS counselors provided for me. I am beyond grateful for all the lessons FBS has provided me, for all the memories I will continue to create and cherish and for most importantly, all the individuals who have influenced and inspired me! As cheesy as it sounds (no pun intended), FBS will always have a special place in my heart and be considered home.

Favorite Camp Memory: impossible to say, I’ve loved every moment!
What FBS means to Josh: I came to California 9 years ago and took a one time job as a summer camp counselor, something to make money while I started my life. I did not realize it at the time, but while pursuing my “dream” I would find my true passion, working with children in a summer camp environment. Fitness by the Sea has allowed me to cultivate a new dream, one where everyday at camp I am able to integrate the thing in my life. I truly love and enjoy: creativity, spontaneity, humor, games, and sports all while being a positive influence in the lives of kids. I am truly fortunate and grateful, FBS has brought me something that some people never find their entire lives, a life long passion and working on what you love, and I can’t wait to get this season started!
Favorite Camp Tradition: FBS Morning Cheers are the best! Every day its something new, putting our counselors on the spot and highlighting our campers creativity and courage.
Favorite Quote: “If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.” Henry Ford
What I Look Forward To: Seeing the excited faces of our returning campers when camp begins, and seeing the faces of timid first time campers become full of excitement and joy as they experience and enjoy camp!
Favorite Camp Memory: Founder and owner Eric Colton doing his spin on the little mermaid, dressed as Ariel, singing the camp rules. At the end he walked to the waters edge and all of camp started chanting to him “Commit, commit, commit!” as he swam off into the ocean. Just priceless!
What FBS means to Evan: I started working at FBS the summer after I graduated from The Ohio State University, thinking it would be a great last fun job before my “real” career started. That was nine years ago, I had no idea how special this camp was going to be to me, and how much it was going to impact my life. After my first year as a counselor I left to join corporate America, and quickly realized that the money was not worth the role I was forced to play, I knew I had to get back to FBS summer camp. Fortune favors the daring, and I took a chance and made a choice with my heart and my head, and that has led to the most fulfilling years of my life directing FBS summer camps. From the incredible staff at our camps to the amazing, goofy, caring campers, I smile every day knowing how fortunate I am to be a part of this world class organization. During my time at FBS I have been fortunate to experience the camp as a counselor, assistant director, and director, working hand in hand with the founder and owner, Eric Colton. This has allowed me to learn the camp from multiple perspectives and to gain a true understanding of what makes summer camp so important, and in particular what makes Fitness by the Sea so unique, engaging, and valuable to the communities it serves.
Years in Camp (camper and staff member): Going on 5 years as a counselor
Favorite Food: Soft Pretzels
Favorite Camp tradition: Coneball cabana competition and the “What time is it” cheer
Favorite Quote: “Hedgehogs…why can’t they just share the hedge?!”
What you look forward to every year at camp: Teaching kids new cheers, teaching kids how to be comfortable in the ocean, and being out in the water yelling “PARTY WAVE!” when big waves come.
Favorite Camp Memory: On my last day of camp one year there was a pod of dolphins swimming past the waves. Knowing that I am obsessed with dolphins, as I am the dolphin cabana counselor at camp, all the kids started telling me to go swim after them. I hopped on a surfboard and caught up to the dolphins while all the kids cheered my name. I came out of the water and got lots of high fives and hugs.
What FBS means to Gracie: Working with the counselors and kids at FBS has given me four of the most memorable and fun summers of my life. The ocean is my favorite place to be year round and being able to participate at such a fun camp at the beach every day of the summer is great! I love meeting all the kids that come and making them feel like they have just entered the greatest place ever and that they are an important part of the camp, whether they are 4 or 13. I have created many lasting friendships with the counselors and the kids. I met my best friend at this camp as well as several families and kids I stay in contact with year round. I am always amazed by the creativity, energy, and support of my coworkers.
